Description

Familiarity with Command Line interfaces (CLIs) is important for researchers that make use of computational tools and want to have more control over the reproducibility of their numerical results and their data analysis workflows, because they allow a smooth transition between exploration and automation.

Moreover, CLIs are by far the most flexible way to access supercomputers, and some control of CLI interfaces is typically a prerequisite for HPC system onboarding.

This introductory course will focus on the Bash shell, the most common CLI interface, and is aimed at beginners that have either null or limited experience.

The participant will acquire the basic skills needed for a effective interactive use of a computer through a CLI interface, and for automation of computational tasks through Bash Shell scripting.
