"Probing air shower development through measurements of their induced electric fields"

Abstract: The longitudinal development of cosmic ray induced air showers depends on the nature of the first interaction and its study could shed light on particle physics at high center of mass energies. So far, the longitudinal development has been measured by fluorescence telescopes, which have limited statistics. In addition, the depth of shower maximum has been deduced indirectly from measurements of particles or radio waves on the surface. In this contribution, I demonstrate that by mapping the time dependence of the measured electric field to slant depth along the axis of the air shower, a measure of the longitudinal profile of radio-wave emission can be obtained. I will show that this field mapping profile can be correlated to the longitudinal particle profile.
