Doppler in Medical Imaging - What you know and what you think you know

Oliver Kripfgans from University of Michigan Medical School in the US is visiting IPE. He will give a introduction to recent trends in Doppler imaging in medicine.
Doppler imaging is a central part of medical imaging as implemented on clinical ultrasound scanners. Several modes of Doppler imaging are available. Spectral Doppler provides a high temporal resolution spectrum of velocities within a dedicated spatial location. Color Doppler encodes a region of interest either with velocity or power estimates, visualizing spatial variation of blood flow. Continuous wave Doppler provides a spectrum of velocities similar to Spectral Doppler but in a fixed spatial volume relative to the transducer that is determined by the split-view transmit receive aperture of the transducer. All of these imaging modes are termed Doppler. However, only the last one, i.e., continuous wave, is actually based on the physical principle of a motion induced Doppler frequency shift. This seminar will review the mechanisms of Doppler imaging to shed light on this misconception in ultrasonography.
