Final presentation of the Bachelor Thesis of Nilüfer Yilmaz on the Online optimum filter trigger system for the BULLKID-DM Experiment
Abstract
The BULLKID-DM experiment aims to detect low-mass dark matter particles using an array of about 2300 silicon detectors read out through kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs). To reduce the large volume of continuously acquired data, an FPGA-based readout system performs online event detection. Achieving a low energy threshold while maintaining high trigger efficiency is essential for the experiment's sensitivity to low-mass dark matter.
This thesis presents the implementation of a resource-efficient optimum filter (OF) trigger integrated into the existing FPGA-based event detection system. To reduce computational requirements, the input data streams are decimated before filtering, and a time-multiplexed architecture allows multiple detector channels to share a single filter instance. The implementation further supports runtime reconfiguration of filter coefficients through an extended software interface.
The developed trigger is verified through firmware simulation and hardware tests using a detector emulator. Its functionality, FPGA resource utilization, and processing latency are evaluated to assess the feasibility of integrating optimum filtering into the real-time readout system of the BULLKID-DM experiment.
