Description
The IceCube-Gen2 surface array will extend the existing IceTop array at the South Pole by approximately a factor of eight, combining scintillation detectors and radio antennas to measure cosmic-ray air showers. It will complement the expanded in-ice optical array and the new radio array for ultra-high-energy neutrino detection.
The surface array will enable studies of cosmic rays and their interactions, particularly the transition from Galactic to extragalactic origins. It will also provide a veto for the in-ice optical array by identifying atmospheric backgrounds, improving the detection of astrophysical neutrinos. This contribution presents the design of the IceCube-Gen2 surface array and its scientific capabilities.
