The 5th workshop on Science of the Program “From Matter to Materials and Life” (MML) within the Helmholtz Research Field "Matter" will be an in-presence meeting organized by Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) and will take place at the Johann-Gottfried-Tulla-Hörsaal of KIT (Englerstraße 11, 76131 Karlsruhe) from October 20th to 22th 2025.
The program MML is devoted to analyzing and modifying the structure, dynamics and function of matter and materials by the use of large-scale facilities in close collaboration with users from academic science and industry. This research is closely connected to the user operation of a wide range of research infrastructures encompassing photon-, neutron, and ion sources, high-magnetic field facilities and high-power lasers.
The main purpose of the workshop is to discuss forefront science done at our large-scale facilities with the aim to strengthen or establish cooperations between research groups at the participating centers and profit from the complementary possibilities offered by our various probes. Moreover, selected examples for the further development of our large-scale facilities will be presented and information about the latest developments will be provided.
The scientific program will consist of review talks covering the most recent achievements and highlights, contributed talks, and poster presentations. For the contributed talks, dedicated parallel sessions will be organized providing also the opportunity to discuss our current research plans with particular focus on cross-center activities. These parallel sessions are organized following our three research topics:
- Matter – Dynamics, Mechanisms and Control
- Materials – Quantum, Complex and Functional Materials
- Life Sciences – Building Blocks of Life: Structure and Function
Moreover, opportunities will be provided to present and discuss the progress of our cross-cutting activities which are pursued with colleagues from our neighboring research programs and research fields.
Besides the experts in these field, we encourage in particular young scientists to join the workshop and to present their results.
