Abstract
In an international graduate environment, cultural variations directly influence how students and supervisors interact, communicate, and approach research. This two half-day workshop equips participants for the challenge of engaging international audiences in lectures, seminars and tutorials. During the sessions, you will navigate the intercultural aspects of teaching and learning, including the use of appropriate and inclusive language for high- and low-context cultures. You will also discover effective strategies to generate engagement when students have diverse perspectives
and expectations related to learning and similar contexts. Topics include:
• Increasing awareness of one's own and others’ cultural expectations as related to teaching and learning
• Creating engagement in seminars and tutorials
• Strategies for checking understanding and increasing the visibility of students’ skills
• Avoiding misinterpretations
