Karlsruhe is a city situated in south-western Germany, directly on the border with France. The city is considered as Germany's legal center, being home to the Federal Constitutional Court, Federal Court of Justice, as well as the Public Prosecutor General.
Karlsruhe is also a major research and innovation hub of Germany, as it hosts the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), one of the leading research centers in Germany. Historically, KIT pioneered science-based mechanical engineering, introduced the first German faculty for computer science in 1972, and on August 2nd 1984, received the first-ever German e-mail.
The Campus Nord (Campus North), the former Forschungszentrum, was founded in 1956 as Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe (KfK) (Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Centre) with the Initial activities focused on Forschungsreaktor 2 (FR2)), the first nuclear reactor built by Germany.
Today, KIT is involved in a larger number of domestic and international research projects, in addition to being the host site for the KArlsruhe TRItium Neutrino (KATRIN) experiment.
